Summary of Innovation

GRIPP (Gantry Robotic Intelligent Piece Picker) is a fully automatic robot picker which has a large reach, is compact, safe, and processes up to 1,200 pieces per hour. This type of robotic picking technology is unique, not only because of the large number of products that can be picked, but also because of the flexible and smart use of the robot. Regardless of the shape of the product, the gripper can pick up the item. An “angle of attack” has been built into the software to ensure that the robot always approaches the product from the right direction. As a result, the robot gets a better grip and the error probabilities are significantly reduced. Pre-sorting or buffering of totes is no longer necessary since GRIPP is able to pick items from one source tote into twelve order tote locations. It also provides a space advantage in the warehouse due to its compact size. GRIPP performs measurements such as the weight of the product, the negative weight when grabbing the product, the length and width and even the height of the item. Based on these measurements, the robot determines how quickly it can move an item (weight-dependent) and then places the various items in the correct totes or cartons. The robot places the items in a gentle and precise way so that products are not damaged and you get the most efficient use of space in the in the outgoing order carton. Picking from and placing to partitioned totes is also a possibility with GRIPP.

Innovation Statement

GRIPP (Gantry Robotic Intelligent Piece Picker) is the world’s first gantry enabled robotic piece picker that can simultaneously work on 12 orders at one time. With the ability to process up to 1,200 pieces per hour, GRIPP is the future of goods-to-robot picking.

Applicability

GRIPP is the future of robotic piece picking; providing high speed, reliable, 24/7 operation, it can increase efficiency and reduce costs of traditional goods-to-person workstations.
